Workshop Media’s Jon Bailey takes a look at some of the quirks, annoyances and pet peeves of the Christmas Season in Workshop’s Christmas Humbugs!
I like food. I like food a lot. Or rather, I like a lot of food. This is why I have a niggle with the Business Christmas lunch. It usually takes place in a pub or restaurant from their ‘Christmas menu’. The word ‘menu’ implies a list of options from which to choose. This is not really the case with Christmas menus. The ‘choice’ is usually turkey with veg, or a vegetarian option. With veg. The portion sizes are miserably small, the quality is appalling, the decorations are cheap, the price is astronomical and the staff are surly.
Seriously, if I wanted dry turkey and overboiled vegetables, I’d cook it myself!
The other aspect of the business Christmas lunch is this: why do we all think that spending a lunch with the people you work with all day for the rest of the year is going to somehow be an opportunity to let our hair down? Is eating together under threadbare tinsel while wearing paper hats will transform us all into bosom buddies? Of course not. It doesn’t make any difference – you will still find Nigel’s voice annoying, Joan will still wear too much make-up, and Gavin and Sharon will still get drunk and end up snogging in the stationery cupboard. Just like every other day…
