Since its debut in 2005, Facebook has seen many updates. The News Feed was introduced in 2007 and it now the central feature. Currently being rolled out is a major addition to how the news feed works – The See First option.
There are numerous ways to access your Facebook News Feed already, everyone has a personal preference. Top Stories, Recent Posts, Lists etc. All of these feeds are governed by Facebook’s algorithms which match content from your friends and followed pages with your interests.
Content Sorted by Maths
This sorting and matching performed by the EdgeRank formula is not always accurate, users can end up missing out on content that they would have otherwise been interested in. Quality, relevant content can also get lost amongst the shear amount of posts.
Enter ‘See First’. This new customisation option for news feeds gives users the option to select friends or pages that they are most interested in. Posted content by those selected will be shown at the top of the news feed – overriding the algorithmically selected content.
Organic Reach Reality
If you use Facebook as a content marketing platform for your business or organisation then you properly already know that your page posts will only ‘organically reach’ a percentage of your followers. Generally the smaller your audience the larger the percentage reached.
- Fewer than 1,000 Fans: 25.1%
- 1,000 – 10,000 Fans: 13.8%
- 10,000 – 50,000 Fans: 10.0%
- 50,000 – 100,000 Fans: 9.8%
- More than 100,000 Fans: 7.7%
Numbers are from Jon Loomer’s excellent breakdown of the reality of ‘Organic Reach’, how and why it works. A recommended read.
So with the advent of the ‘See First’ option, Content Marketing has a great opportunity to jump to the head of the queue or news feed in this case.
Be Likeable to be Seen First
Now is the time to make a good impression on your Facebook audience – quality, engaging content that makes you stand out from the crowd is key to maximise your chances of being selected to be seen first.
Facebook is a mixed platform – for personal and business use. So with that in mind it’s important to ensure your content marketing posts are engaging, interesting or entertaining and avoid heavy sales messages. No one likes to be sold to, especially if they are using Facebook on their down time.
Be Seen First with Video
One of the best ways of getting your message out there in the first place is to use Video. Whether you decide to go with a short series of videos that show who you are and what you offer or produce a regular web series video is the killer content for being seen online.
Facebook has become a major player in online video over the last few years. With huge video view numbers and an ever expanding suite of video features, Facebook has become a serious contender to YouTube.
