Like most social media platforms, Twitter has been busy expanding its support for native video content.
But up until October 2015 users have been limited to uploading video content from the mobile apps. Even the desktop Windows Twitter app lacks the video upload function. But the latest update to Twitter.com allows for direct video uploads.
Twitter Desktop Update
Tweeting a ‘native’ Twitter video from the twitter web interface is simple. It’s virtually the same as adding photos. Except now when you click the ‘Tweet’ button instead of being given the option of a ‘Photo’ button you now have an ‘Media’ button.
Making the upload process as simple and as familiar as possible in one way in which Twitter is looking to encourage native use of video – that is video uploaded directly to Twitter rather than linked from elsewhere.

Twitter video is not without it’s limitations. In keeping with Twitter’s limitation on 140 characters in a tweet, a Twitter video is limited to 30 seconds. When uploading you have the option of selecting up to 30 seconds from a longer video. There have been rumors about Twitter dropping the character limit for as long as Twitter has been around. But there is already a way of extending the maximum length of Twitter videos by using a Promoted Video tweet via Twitter’s Amplify ad service. Videos that are uploaded using this service are capped at 10 minutes – this allows for traditional web video content to be used in place of special Twitter edits that are 30 seconds or under. While this might not be practical for all video posts it does present an option be ensuring the best possible reach for video content.’
Twitter Video Analytics
Making the most of video content online means taking the time to see how well your video is performing and learning from the results. This can go beyond the public indicators of popularity like ‘Favorites’ and ‘Retweets’. Twitter has built in analytics tools that allow you to see how effective your tweets are and what type of audience they attract. As part of the various Twitter video updates a beta for ‘Video Activity’ is available for you to see how your video content is performing. Statistics like total views, completion rate as well as a day by day breakdown can help in planning future video tweets.
