There is an ever expanding collection of video content online, in innumerable categories, styles and in various levels of quality. Not all of this video content can be said to have ‘value’.
The NoTube project questions, in a playful way, the implications of the Web2.0 philosophy of user-generated content. – No Tube Contest
What is Valueless Video?
The NoTube Competition is looking for the most valueless video.
As well as looking at the pointless content of entries themselves, NoTube is also examining the unconnected nature of ‘dark videos’ on YouTube.
Whenever you add a video to YouTube an essential part of the process is giving it context and meaning. Adding an appropriate title, description and tags are essential for people to be able to find the video. Without these, videos can loiter on unattended channels for years without being watched at all. These videos become ‘dark’.
An ideal submission to the NoTube Contest meets the following criteria:
- NO evident reason to make it
- NO evident reason to publish it
- NO evident reason to watch such video.
By adding tags or a description, meaning is given to the video. The video may not hold value for many except the original uploader but that is still more value than none!
Don’t be a NoTuber
Just because you don’t have a particularly well curated YouTube Channel, doesn’t mean your videos are going to be nominated in the NoTube Competition. But there are some things to learn from NoTube and the phenomenon of valueless videos.
Videos with value should have context, add meaningful descriptions and tags and link it to your online presence, like your websites or social media pages. This way people can find out more about your, your company or organisation etc. This way video isn’t isolated, its part of a larger presence online.
Critically one of the most important things to consider when creating promotional video content is that successful video content has a purpose, an aim or goal – from the beginning.
