YouTube Red has landed, an ad free YouTube… called it.
It took absolutely no one by surprise last week when YouTube officially announced YouTube Red, their much speculated Ad Free Subscription option.
While many users of YouTube might not be sold on the idea of paying for a service that is currently free, YouTube Red is offering far more than just an ad free experience.
YouTube Red Offering
Slated to start up on October 28th in the US alone at the moment, the service will cost $9.99 per month – the same price point as Netflix. How much bang do you get for your buck?
- Totally Ad Free – No pre-roll ads, no banners no pop ups. All gone. This also includes the other specialist YouTube platforms Gaming and Kids.
- Save content offline for playback without a network connection.
- Background playback while using other apps on mobile platforms.
- Includes YouTube Music subscription and Google Play Music – a service comparable to Spotify.
- Exclusive access to ‘Premium’ original content from YouTube producers (starting in 2016).
The addition of complete access to Google’s music services is a great addition and one that is very likely to attract many users who were on the fence.
Additionally, questions over whether online original content can match up to the same quality as ‘traditional media’ have long since been answered, with the likes of Netflix delivering content like Marvel’s Daredevil to the online video market.
YouTube Red Marketing Impact
What does YouTube Red mean for those who use YouTube for marketing? Well for a start it doesn’t mean that users who opt in for YouTube Red won’t see your promotional content.
YouTube Red only removes ads, such as pre-roll ads, mid video ads, banners and pop ups. If you use YouTube to host your promotion video content it’s still going to be accessible – just not as ads.
Those that choose to monetize their video content may be wondering how they are going to generate revenue from content when people can pay to opt out of seeing ads.
The YouTube Red subscription fee will be split with content creators in a similar way to how ad revenue is cut up and distributed.
Evolving Video Platform
With YouTube Red, the platform is evolving to meet a growing demand from it’s audience for a higher quality viewing experience. But it still remains a powerful marketing tool if used correctly.
Traditional ‘adverts’ are going to find very little appeal on the platform now that the ad free option has arrived even with those users who don’t subscribe to the YouTube Red option. Users don’t go to YouTube to be sold to.
To make the most out of YouTube, original video marketing content crafted for the right audience is one of the keys to being seen.
